Fab Lab Boot Camp
by Fraser Croft [Staff] - Wednesday, 26 March 2014, 02:57 PM

Boot Camp Provides Design and Enterprise Opportunities

Young people with an active interest in design and enterprise have the opportunity to attend a free boot camp next month.

Fab Lab Airedale is running a Design and Enterprise Boot Camp for 16-18 years in conjunction with leading medical supplier DePuy Synthes, which is also offering accompanying work placements.

The camp, running from April 7-11th, features a week-long series of activities aimed at inspiring students to be innovative and develop skills in design, product development, and engineering.

They will also get involved in business and enterprise activities, accessing the Fab Lab’s wide range of equipment including 3D printers, laser cutters and CNC routers. In addition they will get an introduction to CAD (Computer Aided Design) and CAM (Computer Aided Manufacture) as well as developing problem solving, budget management, project management, time management, team working and presentation skills.

Chris Stott Business Operations & Sales Manager at Leeds City College, which part-funds the Fab Lab with Bradford Council, said: “The week is suitable for young people looking at a wide range of career options, and would be an excellent addition to any CV, portfolio or personal statement.”

The boot camp is a part of an on-going partnership between Fab Lab and DePuy Synthes aimed at encouraging young people into engineering and to create a pipeline of potential employees for their business.

DePuy Orthopaedics, which designs, manufactures, markets and distributes products for reconstructing damaged or diseased joints and for repairing and reconstructing traumatic skeletal injuries, is setting a brief for the boot camp and their engineers will be working with candidates to help them develop their ideas.

The week concludes with a presentation to a group of ‘dragons’ from DePuy Synthes and a prize giving session.

FE Pioneers
by Keith Tellum [Staff] - Monday, 24 March 2014, 05:18 PM

Leeds City College has granted Awards to its First FE Pioneers

Leeds City College recently secured £15,000 to deliver the FE Pioneers programme. Funded through UnLtd, the scheme aims to find and nurture young people aged between 16-21 who wish to pilot a venture, idea or concept that has a clear social agenda.

Applicants are supported to develop their proposal, and subsequently pitch their ideas to a Panel who assess each pitch, allocate the cash award, and work closely with the students to support their venture.  Students can apply for up to £500 to enable them to test their idea on a small scale to find out if it is viable.

Students are encouraged to come forward and discuss their idea with the team as soon as possible so they can help students to complete their application forms and prepare for their pitch.

Applicants must:

  • Have an idea that describes a positive social impact
  • Identify a need and demand for the idea and can describe how the idea tackles a problem, issue or conflict
  • Describe the activities that will be undertaken as part of the award and include what the social venture hopes to achieve
  • Illustrate how the award will be a learning opportunity

Students can apply individually or in small groups. For further information about the FE Pioneers programme, please contact Koleen.wright@leedscitycollege.ac.uk / 0113 216 2223 or drop in to Room A2.04, Park Lane Campus.

More details are available from FE Pioneers, attached to this post (top right.)
